Find a Job |
Submit half of your resume
Find the company you want to work for. Write a great cover letter about why you qualify by pointing to the attached resume. Do not seal the envelope or include your resume. They'll think the resume came in the mail. They will call and start a conversation. Sell yourself shamelessly.
Write a letter about the search
Take advantage of direct mail. Find 5-10 companies. Write a letter to your contact network and ask if they know anyone who works for any of the companies on your list. When a contact says he knows someone on your list, send them your resume and ask them to forward it to your contact or ask permission to send it yourself.
Chain email
Make a list of 20 companies you want to work for and send an email to everyone you know to see if they know anyone who works for those companies. Ask them to contact you if they do so you can ask for a referral. Finally, ask them to forward your letter to 10 more people. However, don't do this if you are currently working!
Hand out the booklet
Write a brochure with information relevant to your industry and distribute it. Everyone loves free information and your experience demonstrates it. Distribute the brochure electronically and advertise it in newsgroups for hiring managers to see.
Call Human Resources
Sounds crazy, right? Call Human Resources. Ask them which outside agency or third-party recruiting firm they use. They will ask you why you want to know. Let them know their company is not currently looking for someone with your skillset, the agency may be doing business with other firms right now, so you are looking for referrals. They may well ask you for an interview. If not, at least you'll get a clue. They would like to save on agency fees. Also, when recommended, you pay special attention. Send them a letter of thanks.
This is a guerrilla tactic that can give you the best results. Be sure to stay tuned for 5 more creative tips to find a job.
